NPHI Welcomes Karen Rubel as Chief Philanthropy Officer to Strengthen Philanthropic Initiatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) today announced that Karen Rubel, a longtime healthcare executive and former NPHI Board Member, will support NPHI’s philanthropic and strategic partnership efforts as part of her new role as Chief Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships Officer at Healthsperien, LLC. Rubel brings more than two decades of healthcare leadership, philanthropic expertise and a proven record of building partnerships that strengthen care for patients and families.

In her new role at Healthsperien, Rubel will support NPHI’s Philanthropy Collaborative and develop strategic relationships for its Innovation Lab, helping expand philanthropic investment in initiatives that advance NPHI’s mission. Her work will focus on creating new opportunities for collaboration and securing resources that benefit NPHI’s growing community of nonprofit, mission-driven organizations.

“Karen is exactly the kind of visionary leader we need as NPHI enters its next chapter of growth,” said Tom Koutsoumpas, Founder and CEO of NPHI. “She understands what it takes to lead a mission-driven healthcare organization, build lasting relationships and turn bold ideas into meaningful action. Having served on our Board, Karen already knows NPHI, our members and the values that unite us. Her experience and passion will be invaluable as we expand our reach and create new opportunities to improve care for patients and families nationwide.”

Rubel most recently served as President of Chapters Health West while also serving as President and CEO of Nathan Adelson Hospice, Nevada’s leading hospice provider. Since joining Nathan Adelson Hospice in 2007 and becoming President and CEO in 2019, she helped strengthen the organization’s operations, expand access to care and build philanthropic and community partnerships. Until recently, Rubel also served on NPHI’s Board of Directors, contributing her leadership and perspective as a hospice executive to the organization’s national priorities. Her accomplishments have earned numerous honors, including the Las Vegas Chamber’s 2024 Executive of the Year Award.

“Karen brings something important to this work: the perspective of someone who has spent years leading a hospice organization while never losing sight of the people and families at the center of our mission,” said Carole Fisher, President of NPHI. “She knows firsthand the challenges our members face and the extraordinary opportunities we have when we bring the right people, ideas and resources together. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together, particularly as we think beyond traditional approaches to philanthropy and innovation.”

Rubel’s new role reflects NPHI’s continued investment in the leadership and resources needed to serve an expanding national membership. As the organization grows, NPHI is strengthening its capacity to provide members with meaningful support and develop innovative solutions to the challenges facing hospice, palliative and advanced illness care providers.

The announcement follows NPHI’s September 2026 welcome of Calvin McDaniel as Vice President of Strategic Engagement. In his role, Calvin helps strengthen member relationships and support opportunities for organizational growth and collaboration.

Together, these leadership additions reinforce NPHI’s commitment to bringing exceptional talent and new ideas together to advance high-quality, mission-driven care.
