Official Statement
The National Partnership for Healthcare Innovation (NPHI) encourages the U.S. Department of Education to carefully reconsider its proposed changes to federal student loan eligibility and repayment terms for graduate medical education programs. At a time when healthcare providers across the country are confronting significant workforce shortages, particularly in hospice, palliative care, and advanced illness care, policies impacting the next generation of clinicians must be approached with a focus on long-term workforce sustainability and patient access.
Healthcare organizations across the country, particularly in hospice, palliative care, and advanced illness care, continue to face significant workforce shortages that impact access to care for patients and families. Supporting pathways into nursing, medicine, social work, and other interdisciplinary healthcare professions will remain essential as demand for care continues to grow nationwide.
As the healthcare system continues addressing workforce shortages across the country, NPHI welcomes the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Department of Education, healthcare leaders, and other stakeholders to support the next generation of clinicians entering these essential professions. NPHI remains committed to advancing thoughtful, forward-looking policies that strengthen the healthcare workforce and help ensure patients and families nationwide continue to have access to high-quality advanced illness, hospice, and palliative care services.
