WASHINGTON D.C. [May 14, 2025] – The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI), the national voice for nonprofit hospice and advanced illness care providers, has released the latest resource in its Advanced Cancer Care series—a Clinical Guide. Created exclusively for NPHI member organizations, the guide reflects NPHI’s deep commitment to ensuring patients and families have access to high-quality, compassionate care from the comfort of home. It builds on the success of the Advanced Cancer Care Patient & Caregiver Guide, created in partnership with the American Cancer Society, which was made publicly available in fall 2024.
Cancer touches nearly every family, often bringing life-altering challenges. In 2025 alone, the American Cancer Society estimates that over 2 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the U.S. As the need for accessible, home-based care grows more urgent, NPHI members are leading the way—delivering high-quality, person-centered support to patients and families in the places they call home, aligned with their goals and values throughout the course of advanced illness.
These two comprehensive resources are designed to reduce unnecessary hospital and emergency room visits, easing stress for patients, families, and the healthcare system. Informed by the insights of more than 120 nonprofit hospice and advanced illness care providers, the Advanced Cancer Care Clinical Guide offers evidence-based best practices specifically for clinical teams within the NPHI member network. It serves as a practical, trusted resource for delivering high-quality, home-based cancer care.
In tandem, the Advanced Cancer Care Patient & Caregiver Guide—which is freely available to the public and developed in partnership with the American Cancer Society—was created for anyone navigating advanced cancer, including patients, caregivers, and family members. Designed to be accessible and empowering, the guide helps individuals understand what to expect, how to manage symptoms, and how to make informed decisions.
Key topics covered in both guides include:
- Information About Cancer
- Openly Talking About Cancer
- Managing Symptoms
- Managing Medicines
- Taking Care of Yourself
- Additional Treatment Options
“Every family impacted by cancer deserves the best support possible,” said Tom Koutsoumpas, CEO of NPHI. “Our cancer guides are more than just resources; they are a lifeline for families facing the challenges of cancer. By providing clear information and practical solutions, we hope to empower patients to make informed decisions about their care and focus on what truly matters: being present at home with their loved ones.”
Dr. Cameron Muir, Chief Medical and Innovation Officer at NPHI, echoed this sentiment: “Cancer patients and their caregivers often face the daunting challenge of navigating complex care systems. Yet, with the right support, they can avoid unnecessary hospital stays and focus on what truly matters: creating lasting memories at home with loved ones. Our work with the American Cancer Society allows us to provide this vital resource to guide and empower patients and their families to take control of their care. Our goal is to enhance their quality of life, allowing them to receive compassionate care in the comfort of their own homes.”
“At the American Cancer Society, we are dedicated to supporting those living with cancer and their caregivers,” said Dr. Arif Kamal, chief patient officer at the American Cancer Society. “This collaboration reflects our unwavering commitment to providing essential information and resources, so that everyone can navigate the complexities of cancer care with confidence and support.”
Dr. Muir concluded: “Alongside our innovative members and the American Cancer Society, we are dedicated to ensuring that the cancer journey is one of dignity, hope, and resilience.”
