Hospice is at a “Crossroads“
In a new op-ed for U.S. News & World Report, NPHI founder & CEO Tom Koutsoumpas shares his personal story highlighting the vital role of nonprofit, community-based hospices. He urges protecting these patient-centered providers, which prioritize care over profit, and calls for a renewed focus on “people over profits” to preserve the values that define hospice care.
In his article, Tom reflects on his early experiences in the 1970s, when families often struggled through end-of-life care without the support that hospice provides today. Those moments shaped his lifelong commitment to ensuring that care at the end of life is compassionate, dignified, and of the highest quality.
While hospice has since become a cornerstone of the healthcare system, its future depends on strong policies and sustained commitment. Tom emphasizes that safeguarding and strengthening hospice and palliative care must remain a priority at the national level.
