NPHI Provides an Overview of the New Political Environment and of the Corresponding Policy Opportunities (1.21.21)
Today, the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) hosted a discussion with Senior Advisor Andrew MacPherson focused on the changing political climate in Washington and the newly relevant policy opportunities for the hospice and palliative care industry. The meeting aimed to provide member programs with an overview of the new composition of Congress, introduce members to the Biden administration’s relevant personnel and priorities, and provide a brief summary of NPHI’s 2021 policy priorities as they relate to the new administration’s health care policy goals. Andrew provided members with his insight into the politics of unified Democratic control of government and offered an assessment of the potential health care legislative actions the new Congress may take up in the coming year.
“We at NPHI congratulate the incoming administration on a successful inauguration and could not be more excited about the possibilities for positive policy developments in the coming year. The Biden administration faces a cascading set of immediate challenges – the Coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying vaccine distribution, an economy in turmoil, and a looming impeachment trial – yet, we have great optimism for what this new political environment will yield for not-for-profit, community-based hospice and palliative care providers.” Said Tom Koutsoumpas, CEO of NPHI. “In the face of a changing Washington, NPHI has doubled down on engaging with the new administration to educate them on the importance of the work our programs do and looks forward to working across party lines to advance constructive and beneficial policies for our members.”
The conversation, entitled “NPHI Member Engagement Call: New Congress, New Administration: Policy Opportunities for NPHI Member Programs in 2021”, was part of a biweekly series of NPHI-hosted discussions to address today’s pressing hospice topics through engagement with health policy experts, thought leaders, and other industry innovators.
The discussion was meant to present and educate NPHI’s membership on the new leadership in control of Congressional committees with healthcare jurisdiction, the interplay between the new administration and the slim Democratic majorities on Capitol Hill, and the various policy issues and initiatives that have continued to progress despite the transfer of executive power, such as the CMMI V-BID Hospice Carve-In Demonstration and relevant MacPAC recommendations.
